TYPES OF ONLINE YOGA CLASSES

You may have tried other online yoga, but with our classes, you can feel part of a holistic community of connected, calm minds.

We may not have the full yoga class timetable online just yet – but that’s because some of our holistic classes use equipment that not everybody has. Instead, we’ve picked a few firm favourites that our instructors can adapt in the knowledge you’ll be doing the class at home (or in the park, or by a peaceful babbling brook if that’s your vibe…) Simply put, most of our online yoga classes will require some free space, a mat, an open mind… and maybe a cushion or blanket.

There’s new content being uploaded to Out The Box each and every week, meaning that you’ll have more online yoga to access and keep every flow fresh as you like. But first, we’d better introduce you to the classes on offer. Which one do you think you’ll be trying first…?

Active Beast

Bring out your inner beast and drop on all fours in our latest animal flow class. Combining fluid ground-based movement with elements of mobility and body weight training.

Looking for something new to add to your yoga routine? Active Beast’s a great place to start. Combining a range of movements grouped into the ‘six components’, they can each be mixed and matched to give you a range of motion that you can go on to incorporate into your workouts. Mixing up wrist motions, activations, form specific stretches, travelling forms, switches & transitions and flows; this ground-based movement program can improve the function and communication of the ‘human animal’ in a workout that sits somewhere between gymnastics, yoga and breakdancing.

As a part of your usual fitness routine, animal flow has the ability to get you moving in all planes of motion with just your body – with its bodyweight-based approach helping you to get more in tune with your physical form. One of the handiest things about it is that you don’t need any equipment, and you can do it just about anywhere – great news for when you’re looking for yoga classes online. We’ve already got a few videos of this unique body-busting workout ready for you to try right now. Give it a go online now!

Ashtanga Yoga

Thought it was badass to lift weights? Imagine a workout so deep that even your breath feels the burn. For a more athletic, strength-based flow, work your way through postures that are dynamically synced with your every gasp. Holistic has never been so hardcore.

Yoga is widely known as a philosophy of life to balance body and mind in perfect harmony. ‘Ashtanga’ means ‘eight limbs’ – a principle that forms the foundation of this particular yoga practice by spanning abstinences, observances, postures, breath control, sense withdrawal, concentration, meditation and contemplation. Created by K. Pattabhi Jois in 1948, this modern-day take on classical yoga combines energetic movement with synchronised breaths.

It’s a demanding and dynamic practice that requires strength, stamina and even a fair bit of sweat – not something you might expect from the easy-breezy vibes of yoga. But don’t be put off. It may be a bit hardcore at times, but by tapping into your vital energy flows throughout your body, Ashtanga has the ability to purify the nervous system, clear your mind and give your body the hard reset it’s been craving. One of the most defining features of Ashtanga is its capabilities for building overall strength, with challenging chaturangas and vinyasa repetition meaning you’ll be pushing your body to new yogi limits. But don’t think you won’t still get that feeling of chill too – the breathing techniques and meditative elements of Ashtanga practice mean that your mind will be brought to a place of unique and overwhelming calm. Are you ready to move? Give it a go online now!

Contortion

Big on backbends, focused on flexibility – it’s yoga, but with a twist. Whether you’re looking to build your strength, tone up for aerial or fulfil your dream of becoming a human pretzel, loosen up and let yourself go. You’ll want to be in it for the long stretch.

Simply put, inversions are a yoga posture that puts your heart higher than your head. They cover all kinds of yoga poses – even the entry-level Downward Dog is an inversion! But in this class, you’ll start to build the flexibility you need to explore a whole range of inversions – a movement well-known to help produce stronger arms, legs, back muscles and cores. But that’s not the only reason why you should try it out. Purposely putting ourselves upside down is an act that physically shakes up what our bodies are used to in our day-to-day lives, and as a result, inversions have the powerful ability to completely shake ourselves up.

Amongst the broad range of benefits, the inversions you’ll tackle at Contortion are believed to improve circulation, increase immunity, energise you, help you relax, improve balance, build confidence… all while giving you a literally new perspective. Poses such as the shoulder stand, headstand, handstand and forearm balance are great for strengthening you from your core down (or… up) as you learn the principle of ‘drawing into the mid-line’ as a way to keep your balance. Then there’s all the ways it readjusts your insides too – from your nervous system and overall circulation, to stimulating the better function of your lymphatic system. So go on, what are you waiting for? Give it a go online now!

Pilates

Build the strength to smash life, without the incredible bulk. This is all about control: precise movements that stretch and tone to improve your posture, increase your flexibility and reinforce your core. You know what they say. Hit the mat and you’ll never go back.

If you’re new to pilates, you may be a little unsure what you’re in for. Perhaps you’ve even been putting off trying. But the benefit of trying our pilates classes online means you can take it at your own pace, and remove any of those anxious flutters. Developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, this yoga-like workout was created as a way to connect mental and physical health, while improving overall wellbeing and general fitness. As a practice, Pilates offers all kinds of benefits to your body – even if you’re a beginner. Amongst many things, you’ll improve your posture, focus on bodily alignment, and work your core hard.

In fact, regular pilates sessions have been shown to vastly boost abdominal endurance, flexibility and balance – all through low-impact, super-strengthening exercises. These slow, precise movements, accompanied by careful focus on breathing mean that you can get a full-body workout that helps you to move everything better. The slow, gentle nature of these difficult poses mean that they’re particularly good if you want a way to keep training after sustaining an injury. It’s all about building strength, not bulk – in a way that can totally reshape your whole body and clear your mind. Best of all, is that the lack of equipment means you can try this online yoga class, anywhere you like. Give it a go online!

If you love to train but don’t invest in rehabilitation, what the hell are you playing at? Rehab doesn’t just have to come when you’ve done yourself an injury – but the kind of exercises you’ll do may be the kind of thing a physio would prescribe. Think of this online yoga class as a preventative measure, and a brilliant way to bring back full function to every part of your body in between workouts. With an aim is to restore muscle strength, endurance, power and flexibility, these online classes are designed to correct every part of your training performance and to keep you on top form.

From physical strength to mental clarity, Rehab is your opportunity to give your body the TLC it sorely needs. Give it a go online!

Rollin With My Yogis

Meet the new prop on the block: This cool little piece of kit opens up your chest, gets those hips flexin’ and makes you roll deep into your practice. You’ll bump up your strength, stability and style. Form poses to perfect your backbends and align your spine with your body and body with your mind.

Getting your hands on a yoga wheel is bound to revolutionise your life. These clever little props take a narrow, but wide cylinder made of plastic – giving you the ideal tool to stretch, curve and strengthen your spine. Providing full support along the full length of your back, they’re perfect for building your flexibility to improve other areas of your yoga practice – as well as easing tension in all of your muscles as a part of your restorative training. Basically. if you want to take your training to a more advanced level, this is a great place to start.

Yoga wheels have become incredibly popular over the last few years, and it’s no surprise to see that their popularity is on the rise. As an incredibly versatile piece of kit, you can use them to gain flexibility, mobility, strength and stability – which as you can imagine, are incredibly useful if you’re trying to improve your overall fitness routines. From spinal massage and mobility, stretching and lengthening, strengthening and toning, balance and stability to deepening your overall practice – the range of poses you can achieve mean you can target almost every part of your body. Ready to roll? Give it a go online!

Vinyasa Flow

Smooth as silk. Chill as you like. Vinyasa flow is your secret oasis of order amongst the chaos of modern life. Knock the frenzy down a few notches by channelling your energies into a dynamic flow that builds strength, improves flexibility and restores sanity one delicious breath at a time.

In a nutshell, Vinyasa is a type of yoga class that strings a number of poses together to create one single, fluid sequence of music. The sessions are usually quick-moving and quite rhythmic, and you’ll be encouraged to sink into the movement with your breath and paying close attention to each transition. It’s often thought to be quite a fast and physically challenging practice – so expect to get a bit of a sweat on! That being said, it’s a type of yoga class that anyone can get into – whether you’re a seasoned yogi or new to the mat. No two classes are ever the same because there isn’t a set sequence or number of poses you need to reach. But that creativity and playfulness aren’t the only reason to get involved.

There are many benefits to incorporating Vinyasa Flow into your regular yoga routines. The range of motion means you get a full body workout, taking time to focus on different parts of the body in a way that familiarises you with your form. It’s also a great cardiovascular workout, with the pace of the class meaning your heart rate and temperature rises rapidly – as will your sweat levels. Like many types of yoga class, it’s also great for building strength and relieving stress, which means you’ll experience plenty of feel-goods long after you’ve finished your session. But more than anything, you can fully expect to reconnect with one of the most important things for our wellbeing – the breath. Give it a go online!

Yin Yoga

Sometimes you just need to take it slow – and Yin is the way to go. The strong and silent type, this meditative flow works for a much deeper connection than most, calming your mind and finding moments of still between the madness of daily life. It’s down time you’ll want to stretch out.

If the vigorous flow of Vinyasa and Hatha are the “yang”, you probably can start to get an idea of what would make the “Yin”. Based on ancient Chinese philosophies of Taoist principles surrounding the pathways of Qi (energy), Yin focuses on a much slower practice that stretches and lengthens your rarely-used tissues. Deep poses and meditative holds mean your body enters a space that’s directed more inwards, tuning you in to the sensations of your body and the peace within your mind. It’s believed that doing this opens up any blockages your physical self may be experiencing – and releasing that energy to flow more freely within.

How effective is it? Well, some say that Yin can be just as effective as the practice of acupuncture, providing key points of release for the function and flow of the body. Rather than other kinds of yoga that encourage free movement through different postures, the poses in Yin can be held for several minutes at a time. This is because it takes time to access the deeper tissues – particularly around the joints – but by doing so, you get great results. Lengthened connective tissue, increased flexibility, boosted circulation and reduced stress levels are all happy outcomes of regular practice with online Yin Yoga classes. Give it a go online!
