'No retreat no surrender' - a tribute to Errol Christie

13th June

Errol Christie – 29 June 1963 – 11 June 2017

Boxer, Errol Christie, has died aged 53. Errol was a much-loved personality, who became a good friend to all of us at Gymbox. He joined us in 2003 as our first VPT and boxing trainer, and was working with us until his poor health prevented him from doing so.

Errol was introduced to Gymbox founder Richard Hilton at a boxing event during the early stages of Gymbox's inception. He made an instant impression. Errol helped shape the original essence of the brand, and became core to its development. Without Errol, Gymbox would not have become the brand it is today. Errol was a highly valued member of the team.

He displayed courageous spirit in fighting it right until the end. All of us here at Gymbox, and our members who were lucky enough to train with him, will miss Errol greatly. He will forever be remembered in the ring across all our clubs, and as part of the Gymbox family.

Errol was a formidable boxing champion. He fought 41 bouts, taking 32 wins, including 26 by knock-out. Errol was also captain of the English Boxing Team between 1980-1983, and European Boxing Champion in 1983. He made regular appearances on ITV's Fight Night during the 80s, and has also had a book written about him called No Place To Hide.

He was always smiling and happy – people were immediately drawn to him. With his booming voice and his trademark ‘no retreat, no surrender’ slogan you'd often hear Errol long before you saw him! Most people will remember Errol as one of the most talented boxers this country has ever produced. I’ll remember Errol as the funny, kind, high spirited, caring, quick-witted tough bugger he was."

David Cooper: "So sad that you had to 'Moscow' too soon, but the impact you have left will last forever. No retreat no surrender!"

Errol is survived by his son, Louie Christie.

We invite you to support our Errol Christie fund which was initially put in place to support Errol throughout his treatment, the funds will now go towards his funeral expenses.
