Most people will attempt a diet at some point during their lives, the majority of people I come across have weight loss as a goal, many myths surround the area of diet and weight loss. We are constantly bombarded with mixed information from the press.

Some of the more common fad diets are shown here, though you will come across many others and variations of these:

slimming clubs

Theory: That a specific menu plan developed by the company can guarantee effective weight loss

Benefits : often based on simple principles, a group of like minded individuals will provide support.

Drawbacks: Tactics used are sometimes not psychologically beneficial, guilt trips and dependence on scales. May potentially lead to obsession with weight loss and eating disorders.

Starvation diets

Theory : That severe calorie restriction will ensure a negative balance achieved quickly and maintained for as long as the diet is maintained.

Benefits : Large weight reduction in short time span

Drawbacks: loss of muscle tissue that may not return. Lean tissue loss may occur disproportionately from critical organs like the heart. Poor success rate

Liquid diets

Theory: Based on severe calorie restrictions

Benefits : Easy to prepare, this is what makes it so popular

Drawbacks: Does not encourage a lifestyle change. You cannot stay on the diet for long. Often tasted poor and becomes boring.

High fibre

Theory: The fibre expands making you feel full and less able to eat high fat foods

Benefits: speeds up passage of food through the digestive system.

Drawbacks: Tate and the need to drink plenty of water. Very high intakes reduce absorption of certain minerals which may lead to deficiency in some groups. Side effects such as abdominal discomfort.

The principles of weight loss are simple, Consume less calories than you expel, and you will loose weight. Be weary of any diet that goes against this method.

I heard there were like 4 different ones and each viares upon the person. Thyroid Gland, Parathyroid Gland, Pituitary Gland, and Liver. These are the main organs responsible for fat loss. If you can find out which organ stimulates your fat loss personally, you’ve succeded at burning fat. Is this true? I believe mine is the thyroid gland, so what factors stimulte the thyroid Calcium, Protein, Carbohyrdates, etc. What?
