More Than Monkey Food
Organic bananas are just one of the fruits I buy weekly. Great for a quick snack (especially dipped in almond butter yum). Here are some of the health benefits which make them so much more than just monkey food!
Healthy Heart – A banana contains 465mg of potassium which serves as a safeguard for your cardiovascular system. With regular consumption it can help to protect against high blood pressure, strokes and atherosclerosis.
Strong Bones – Banana’s do not have high levels of calcium, however they do contain plenty of the prebiotic fructooligosaccharide, which ferments in the digestive tract improving our ability to absorb calcium from other food sources.
Feel Good – Potassium is an energy-supplying electrolyte. Bananas also contain serotonin, norepinephrine and tryptophan, which serve to fight depression and give you feelings of relaxation and well-being. Also, vitamin B6, found in bananas, helps combat mood swings, sleeplessness and irritability.
Eye Health – In Nigeria bananas are combined with the African herb orinol to treat cataracts. Bananas also share the ability with other fruits to prevent macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss among adults.
Aid Digestion – Bananas contain the soluble fibre pectin, which aids the expulsion of waste products helping to avoid constipation. In addition, bananas can suppress acid in the digestive tract helping to combat heartburn and ulcers.
Make your roses grow beautifully – Er, OK perhaps not a health benefit, but all you green-fingered readers may be interested to know that banana peels make a great fertilizer, particularly for roses.
